It was a fun day in room 3 as we passed out valentines, dipped treats in the chocolate fountain, and created many crafts. Thank you parents for helping us celebrate the holiday in a fabulous way!

Guided Math

We use guided math in our classroom. Before each new math unit the students are assessed to see what they know and grouped so they can be challenged at their level of learning. They work together to practice new skills and learn a variety of strategies to problem solve.

During the month of January the students wrote nonfiction books about topics they are experts on. Some of the books were about different sports, owning a pet, and girls scouts or boy scouts. The students chose different papers and nonfiction features to use. The students included labels, pictures with captions, and a table of contents. They were so excited to complete chapter books for the first time!

My students were challenged to independently work together to assign parts to a play, practice with the group, and create props. They performed the plays that were all based on fables. They taught the class about the moral and the character flaws in their plays. After, they had to come up with examples of the morals that could relate to our lives.

Rock Researching

The students are learning that rock is an earth material and a natural resource. In the pictures the students are investigating the properties of a river rock mixture. They are using screens to sort the mixture into pebbles, gravel, and sand. They will learn later that the smallest particle is silt which can be used to make clay.

Our winter party was so much fun! The students enjoyed the Polar Express morning. They arrived in pajamas and boarded the classroom train for a morning of reading, math, and writing all about The Polar Express. In the afternoon the students enjoyed hot cocoa, the snowball game, snowball fight, crafts, and the snowman dress up contest. It was a wonderful celebration.

Ready, Set, Action!

We love to act in our classroom. Each week a new group is learning a play and practicing to use their most expressive voices. It is performed for the rest of the class to enjoy.
