Data Collecting

It was data collecting week in room three and we had a lot of fun creating surveys, collecting data, and creating graphs to show our results. Mrs. Partyka's data collecting included tasting different kinds of popcorn. Our class liked cheese the best but we were surprised how many liked vanilla caramel too! It was a fun way to work with data collecting!

We learned a lot about owls! We read many books and compared two different kinds of owls as part of our research. The best part was taking apart an owl pellet and sorting the bones. We were able to learn what the owl ate by matching the bones to a bone chart showing different animals owl eat.

Writing With Pictographs

We have been studying what life was like for the Native Americans and the Pilgrims. We learned that the Native Americans created stories using pictographs. We created our own using both words and pictures and put them on large pieces of paper. It was fun to take a museum walk and read all the stories our fellow classmates wrote.

Reported By: Collin We had our Halloween parade and party. Kaden and I were the grand marshals of the parade. A police car led the parade past the post office and police station. After the parade we had our party. We had four stations that included the mystery chairs, spooky snacks, bag making, and spooky buckets. It was a great time!

Witch's Brew

We created a witch's brew in room three. It included bat wings, spooky ghosts, worms, and other Halloween treats. The students sorted the treat and completed many math problems using their brew. After their work was complete, they enjoyed the spooky snack.

Spooky Stories

The students enjoyed writing spooky stories. They peer edited and added more descriptive words and sound words. The class got to listen to all the stories by flashlight. It was a chilling time in room three.

Our class earns points for outstanding teamwork. After collecting the total points needed, we enjoy a break that is voted on by the students. I was thrilled the students wanted to be together outside for our recent break. It was so wonderful to enjoy the outdoors while the weather is still warm. The girls were much more cooperative for pictures while the boys had a serious game of soccer or football going on and only allowed me to take action photos.

Our school follows the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Systems) to promote good behavior in our school. Mystery Genre

We began learning about a new genre in class, mysteries. The students are learning how to take notes of the clues, suspects, and events to solve a crime or prank in our newest genre study. Many of the students have never read a mystery before. Some students are choosing new mystery titles to read on their own.

Amelia Bedelia Fashion Show

What would Amelia Bedelia think sunglasses are? Well, glasses with suns right on them! The students were very creative designing outfits that only Amelia Bedelia understands. Our event continued in our classroom for some refreshments because we know that is what Amelia Bedelia was best at...cooking!

South Elgin HS Band!

We had a rockin' visit from the South Elgin High School band! The students were inspired by their performance and many are asking when they can take band. Lucky for our students they can start in fifth grade and have lessons at school!

Learning About Air

The students are learning about air and how the wind effects the weather by moving clouds and changing temperatures. They created a weather vane and observed how an anemometer works. They also played with bubbles to observe how the wind moved them and they could not control the direction that they blew in. Soon the students will take all they have learned to become meteorologists and report on the weather keeping a journal over two weeks. After the two weeks they will analyze the data to see how consistent or changing the weather was during that time.

Mystery Reader

We enjoyed a visit from Erik's dad who read us a variety of books included one about the Cubs! We enjoyed his expressions when he read which kept us laughing. One of our favorite second graders said he is a REALLY good reader! Thanks for being a mystery reader!

Air Resistance

We are learning about air in science. Our experiments have helped us observe how air is a force, invisible, a gas, and is everywhere. Soon we will become meteorologists and learn how air effects weather.

Mystery Reader

We had a mystery reader who brought a book written by a class of second graders! We loved the book and our special visitor!

Our PowerPoint Presentation

The students completed research for their nonfiction report using a variety of resources. They completed their nonfiction books and also a PowerPoint which they shared with their classmates. Mrs. Partyka was very impressed with how quickly they learned to use many of the features in the software and put together an impressive presentation that taught us about all the animals researched.

It has been a long winter with lots of cold and snow in Chicago. The students often don't get outside for recess because of the temperature. When they do go out, they have the BEST time. Mrs. Bolcum our lunch supervisor, took this picture of one group of happy second graders playing in the snow!

Mystery Reader

Thank you Mrs. Moyer for being a mystery reader! We loved the book "Lousy Rotten Stinkin Grapes" by Palatini. It was perfect as we have been learning about fables. We enjoyed the illustrations and loved joining in on the reading of the book. Thank you for visiting us!
