Mystery Reader

Thank you Mrs. Moyer for being our first mystery reader! We loved The Book With No Pictures! It was a fun visit!

Communities

We are learning about communities in class and the students are very good at telling you about an urban, suburban, or rural community. They created their own suburban community and had to decide what to include in it. Many wanted extra parks for kids to play and a school located near their houses.

Book Reccommendations

Can you convince someone to read a book? My students can! After reading Snake Camp by George Edward Stanley these students created a poster and gave a summary and book rating of the book. Many chose to read it!

Our second graders learned what idioms are. They also enjoyed reading Amelia Bedelia books and laughing at how Amelia Bedelia takes everything literally! As a housekeeper she is an excellent cook but not so good at directions. When told to "dress the chicken" she put clothes on it! It is a second grade tradition to have an Amelia Bedelia fashion show with "literal outfit creations." Check out our video to see what the fun is all about!

cricket

Thank you to the Patel and Barot families for teaching us how to play cricket! I think we have a new passion in room 3!

Young Authors

Reported By: Riley and Emma- The Writers Fair was on March 20th. It was a sea adventure and our table said we take a bite out of writing. It had a giant shark. We researched and wrote animal books and created another book at home. Everyone could see our books at the fair. The Scholastic Book Fair was in the library. An author who wrote "Good Night Construction Site" came to talk to us. It was a very fun event!

We made many paper spinner designs and learned how an object rotates around an axis. We saw how air resistance keeps items from falling too fast. We also made spinning tops, wheel and axis systems, and rollercoasters.

Guided Math

We use guided math in our classroom. Before each new math unit the students are assessed to see what they know and grouped so they can be challenged at their level of learning. They work together to practice new skills and learn a variety of strategies to problem solve.

The students chose different papers and nonfiction features to use. The students included labels, pictures with captions, and a table of contents. They were so excited to complete chapter books for the first time!

My students were challenged to independently work together to assign parts to a play, practice with the group, and create props. They performed the plays that were all based on fables. They taught the class about the moral and the character flaws in their plays. After, they had to come up with examples of the morals that could relate to our lives.

The students are learning that rock is an earth material and a natural resource. In the pictures the students are investigating the properties of a river rock mixture. They are using screens to sort the mixture into pebbles, gravel, and sand. They will learn later that the smallest particle is silt which can be used to make clay.

Our winter party was so much fun! The students enjoyed the Polar Express morning. They arrived in pajamas and boarded the classroom train for a morning of reading, math, and writing all about The Polar Express. In the afternoon the students enjoyed hot cocoa, the snowball game, snowball fight, crafts, and the snowman dress up contest. It was a wonderful celebration.

Ready, Set, Action!

We love to act in our classroom. Each week a new group is learning a play and practicing to use their most expressive voices. It is performed for the rest of the class to enjoy.
