A Fairy Tale
We have been learning about different genres in class. Recently, we compared many well known fairy tales and became familiar with the common elements in these stories. Mrs. Partyka read aloud a modern fairy tale called The Tale of Despereaux. Despereaux is a mouse who saves the princess he loves from the dungeon. We also watched the movie and compared how the book and movie were alike and different. Despereaux lives happily ever after!

The Witch's Broom!?
Reported By: Ryan and Mrs. Partyka
Mrs. Berndt read The Widow's Broom. A witch crashed into a vegetable garden on a farm. She left her broom with the widow. The broom swept floors, played the piano and chopped wood. Some of the neighbors burned it but the broom came back. It scared them to move away. The widow lived happily with the broom. Mrs. Partyka's brother Chris found the widow's broom in New York and sent it to her mom, Mrs. Berndt. It was a crazy broom!

Reported By: Our Class
We visited the u-46 planetarium. We learned a lot! Did you know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west? There are 8 planets. Venus and Jupitar have volcanos. Saturn's rings are made of dust and ice. Neptune rotates on its side. All the planets orbit the sun. Learning about space is called astronomy. It is very interesting!

Goodbye Summer
I had a wonderful summer. I taught summer school, biked and traveled. My son Greg was in Joplin, Missouri this summer playing collegiate baseball. When he returned home, we enjoyed lots of family time. I was in Washington, DC on the president's birthday. My family visited many museums and monuments. We also went to Pittsburgh to see the Cubs play the Pirates. Our last stop was Cedar Point for lots of rollercoasters. It has been a fun summer but I am very excited for school to start and see all of my favorite second graders!

Bubbles In Science!
Reported By: Jennifer
We made bubbles and it was fun. I made a bubble that was big as my hand! Bubbles were big and small. Did you know bubbles fill up with air? The wind pushes the bubbles north, south, east and west. But when there is no wind the bubbles fall to the grass. Bubbles are really fun to learn about. And that is the end of my report.

Amelia Bedelia Fashion Show
Reported By: Mrs. Partyka
My favorite second graders are the most creative fashion designers! They understood what Amelia Bedelia would think when she hears t-shirt (a shirt with tea bags), sunglasses (glasses with suns taped on them) or tank top ( a top with army tank pictures). You were amazing second graders! Thanks to your families for helping to create such nifty outfits!

Dancing Time
One time at ballet I saw Mrs. Partyka! Let me tell you some things about ballet. If you are going to be on your toes then you'll need special point shoes. Another thing that is importnat is you should stretch. I'm practicing for my recital. It is a lot of fun. My dress is very pretty. It is the one in the picture. I believe ballet is French. I am going to keep taking ballet so I can get really good at it. It is the best ever!

Amelia Bedelia
Amelia Bedelia visits our room! Students love the hilarious character Amelia Bedelia! She understands things to literally and it often gets her in trouble. She is an amazing cook but doesn't do very well in her other housekeeping chores. When asked to draw the drapes, she takes crayons and draws a picture of them. Once she was told to dress the chicken for dinner and she put an outfit on it! The class will enjoy many of her stories and quickly learn of her unique character traits.

Mrs. Beck Shares A New Story!
Reported By: Katelyn
Mrs. Beck came into our classroom to share a book with us. It is called "Martina, The Beautiful Cockroach." It was a great story! Emily told us she has two coackroaches as pets. Mrs. Beck told us she bought the book at our book fair. We were her first class she read it to. She's a great principal! The story is about a cockroach who is in need of a husband. She finds one who is kind and has a Cuban grandmother just like her. Some of the words were in Spanish. We loved the book and Mrs. Beck's visit.
