Reported By: Ben and Gavin- We had a performance about Kenya, Africa. We made an ABC book with facts about the country. We sang a song about the animals you see there. We also performed a play about Bamusa and the monkeys. We wore cool glasses and safari hats. It was fun performing for our families and visiting the other first grade classrooms.

Class President For The Day

The students learned about many of our presidents. They also brainstormed character traits that make a good leader. They were challenged to write a speech that told of their traits and why they would make a good class president for the day. Our winner wrote a speech that got many votes and a day in Mrs. Partyka's "Oval Office."

Guided Math

We use guided math in our classroom. Before each new math unit the students are assessed to see what they know and grouped so they can be challenged at their level of learning. They work together to practice new skills and learn a variety of strategies to problem solve.

During the month of January the students wrote nonfiction books about topics they are experts on. Some of the books were about different sports, owning a pet, and girls scouts or boy scouts. The students chose different papers and nonfiction features to use. The students included labels, pictures with captions, and a table of contents. They were so excited to complete chapter books for the first time!

My students were challenged to independently work together to assign parts to a play, practice with the group, and create props. They performed the plays that were all based on fables. They taught the class about the moral and the character flaws in their plays. After, they had to come up with examples of the morals that could relate to our lives.
