Native American Stories
We learned a lot about the Native Americans and the role they had helping the pilgrims. We learned how valuable the land was to them and how they used the natural resources of the land for all their needs. The students paired up to create a story about Native Americans using pictographs for some of the words.

Honoring Our Veterans
Veteran's Day is celebrated in a special way at Wayne School. The students invite our local veterans to have breakfast and a special presentation from the students. Many of our veterans visit our classrooms and talk to the students about their experiences serving our country.
First Mystery Reader
Reported By Emma:
We had our first mystery reader! Mrs. O'Connor read two very good books. One was called Skippy John Jones in Spice. The class loved how she made Skippy talk. I know the mystery reader well because she is my mom!
U-46 Planetarium
We visited the U-46 planetarium. It is amazing to view the domed ceiling as the star machine displays the night sky. Our presentation included a look at the planets and how they are positioned around the sun.

The girls loved reading the Piggie and Elephant books by author Mo Willems. His style for using speech bubbles and varied text sizes make them fun books to read with expression. The class enjoyed the voices of their fellow students sharing one of the books.

Writing With Descriptive Words
How lucky I am to have students who are willing to dress up for me to help with our descriptive writing lesson. How many words can you come up with to describe a pirate? The students enjoyed writing about their Halloween costumes and included lots of descriptive words to help us visualize their costumes.

Time and Money
With the new Common Core standards, the students are being challenged to understand more about time and money early in second grade. Students are very impressive with their abilities to tell time to the five minute intervals already! Often during our day we'll freeze and do a time check. It's fun to work with clocks and money.
Questioning
The students have been asking questions about their reading. Asking questions is a reading strategy that helps you interact with the story and remember important ideas. One student was so excited to see in his Geronimo Stilton book a chapter called Who, What, Where, When, Why. Wow! Questioning done by the author!
Map Creating
We learned a lot of new words in our geography studies and put them into action. We designed maps which included a map key, compass rose, symbols, capital and landforms. We created a fictitious state and capital name.

Authors At Work
Everyday the students are authors at work who love to write! They write about everything from exciting news in their lives to reports about their learning. They even edit their writing to add some BlInG! How fun it is to grab our red pens and look for places to add words with sound, description and feelings. Once our writing comes to life, our authors are ready to read our publications.

Read Like A Detective
Do you read like a detective?
Do you search for clues to best understand what the text is about?
Do you reread to be sure you didn't miss anything?
Do you look at new words very closely?
Do you take notes of important things to remember?
It takes a lot of practice to be the best reading detective!

Amelia Bedelia Fashion Show
We had our traditional Amelia Bedelia Fashion Show. Our new style creations were inspired by Amelia Bedelia's thinking. Only she would understand a briefcase that is a case covered in mens briefs or a bun in the hair that is good enough to eat. Our sunglasses have lots of suns on them and a ball gown has many balls attached to it. The audience got lots of chuckles from our creations.
Listening Walk
We are on a listening walk. The sounds of the school inspire new ideas for poetry writing. Once we returned to class we created many poems about our school that included pencils sharpening, students talking, doors opening, and teachers teaching.

Meet Our New Class Pet Freddy!
Reported By: Amber and Nirali
Freddy is a big frog! He's 16 years old. He is slimy and can change from a dark green to a light green. He has very little teeth and won't bite. You can barely see them. He swims very good and needs to stay wet. He is pig kind of eater and you can only feed him eight small bits of food. We also have two turltles and we think they are going to be good friends.
Meet Mrs. Miller

Solid, Liquid, Gas
Reported By: Lorelei
Mr. Jeno came to teach us about solids, liquids and gases. Dry ice is a solid. If you put it in water it will create a gas. He did an experiment with this. A fire needs oxygen to burn. With no oxygen it will burn out. Mr. Jeno also mixed a solid and liquid. He mixed vinegar and baking soda to create carbon dioxide. It was very interesting.

The Three Billy Goats
Reported By: Christina and Jackson
We were two of the goats in the play The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The three goats thought there was a troll under the bridge but they were wrong. They were afraid it might shoot poison darts out of its fingers tips. They felt very silly when they learned it was only a ladybug. It was a hilarious play!
Mystery Reader
Reported By: Mrs. Partyka
I know the mystery reader very well! It was my son Greg! He was home from college and came to meet my favorite second graders! He read a book about Lou Gerhig since he is one of Greg's heroes. Greg enjoyed doing science with the class and remembering what second grade was like.
Spinning Tops
Reported By: Ben
In science we made spinning tops. To make them work you need an axis and equal weight around it. We had fun making different tops for them. It was awesome playing with tops!
